Tarawera Falls, one of the best walks in New Zealand

In December 2010 we made a special visit to Lake Tarawera’s eastern shores.
We had previously been to the western side of the lake (read Lake Tarawera and the Buried Village) but the journey to Tarawera Outlet required us to travel via Kawerau (off SH 30 between Rotorua and Whakatane) where we had to obtain a permit to travel on the private forestry road to the lake. Free and fabulous in Tairua
There is a small car park overlooking Tairua harbour where, in an attempt to manage freedom camping, the local council have allocated two free overnight spaces for self-contained campervans.
Earlier this week we were lucky enough to get one of these much prized parking spots for the night.

A New Zealand mountain, a sunset and a cafe
Where were we up to?
……..oh yeah…… one of us had climbed a mountain and was ready to rest weary bones and relax for the evening.
And the rest of us were still full of energy.

but it was getting late and we had thoughts of dinner in our heads.
So we decided to go park up the Kiwi Blog Bus for the night and down the road in Pirongia village we found just the place.

Happy Holidays - April 2007 - Kapiti coast - Sun setting over my children playing on the beach
New Zealand is one of the first places in the world to greet each new day – but for me it’s the spectacular daily farewell to the sun that is much more impressive.
Or maybe that’s just because I witness a lot more sunsets than sunrises.
I’m not an early bird.
