If we’re ever heading down to Taupo or beyond, one of our favourite spots to call in for a spot of relaxation, great food and good old easy-going kiwi ambience is Huka Prawn Park and its fantastic riverside restaurant.

We had previously been to the western side of the lake (read Lake Tarawera and the Buried Village) but the journey to Tarawera Outlet required us to travel via Kawerau (off SH 30 between Rotorua and Whakatane) where we had to obtain a permit to travel on the private forestry road to the lake. Magnificent meanderings to Marokopa
A 50km drive out west of Waitomo will lead you through an amazing limestone landscape to the historic west-coast fishing village of Marokopa.
We recently took the scenic route from Waitomo Caves (after we had stayed at Woodlyn Park), and I was blown away by the views along the way.
The road twisted and turned as New Zealand put on a good show of its rugged character and I could not stop taking pictures through a somewhat fly splattered windscreen. Read More…

A Kiwi spot of Tudor, Anglican and Maori
Time for a snapshot of some New Zealand history and architecture.
There is a quiet little suburb of Rotorua where you can see a Tudor style Anglican church set in a historic and sacred Maori village.
Ohinemutu is the beautiful lakeside setting for St Faith’s Church & Tamatekapua Meeting House.

Free lakeside camping surrounded by some of New Zealand’s best
There is a quiet little spot that’s not far from our home town of Cambridge and we often go there for a day or two to completely chill out.
We can leave home in our bus and in less than half an hour be parked up (for free) at a large lakeside reserve where we can fish, kayak, swim or just relax.

On the road again (part 4 – Pahoia)
So the final night of our Waitangi weekend was spent at another free parking spot provided by the wonderful Western Bay of Plenty District Council.
We travelled a little further around the coast line to Pahoia where we parked just a few feet from the shores edge and quickly threw our kayaks into the water for a paddle around.

So after Paeroa we continued on the road.
Waihi for a lunch stop and then on to the coast.
We found a free overnight spot at Katikati in an authorised car park for self-contained campers.
