After a fantastic journey around the Coromandel peninsula we decided to travel inland from Coromandel Town on the infamous 309 road; a winding gravel road which connects the east and west of the peninsula through spectacular scenery and offers lots of interesting sights.

Situated within a large bend of the Ohinemuri River, opposite Waikino village, are the remains of a revolutionary gold processing plant that was once New Zealand’s biggest and best.
The Victoria Battery site was built in 1897 by the Waihi Gold Mining Company to process ore from the large Martha Mine in nearby Waihi. Read More…

Don’t get too close today… I may just bite
Today I’m in the mood for a rant… so, sorry no nice pretty pictures, but sometimes things just have to be said.
Regular readers will know that our two dogs, Jess and Pip the travelling dogs, come with us in the Kiwi Blog Bus on every trip.
This of course means we have to exercise them and pick up after them – which we do without fail.
We are responsible dog owners and walk them on leads in permitted areas only, we take them off the leads when we are on mostly empty beaches or big spacious fields/dog parks etc. Many beaches have strict rules about what time of year dogs are allowed on, or if it’s in the evenings only. Read More…

Whatever the weather
I read in the news today that here in New Zealand we have apparently just experienced one of the warmest Aprils on records.
(April’s record breaking sunshine. )
I must admit we had a pretty crappy summer this year but I can vouch that Autumn has so far made up for it.
New Zealand is supposed to have a temperate climate with four distinct seasons – but the weather can be very changeable and we often get four seasons in one day.

Free and fabulous in Tairua
There is a small car park overlooking Tairua harbour where, in an attempt to manage freedom camping, the local council have allocated two free overnight spaces for self-contained campervans.
Earlier this week we were lucky enough to get one of these much prized parking spots for the night.

A reminder of Pure New Zealand
I stumbled across a video the other day that I’d like to share, in my opinion it’s just fabulous and pure, feel-good New Zealand.
In 2010 Tourism New Zealand launched “Your Big Break” and asked people to capture the essence of 100% Pure New Zealand and tell the world their story of how they see the youngest country on earth.
Working Day was the winner and you can see all five finalists videos here (Frosty is my personal favourite but I also like Sweet As).

A Kiwi spot of Tudor, Anglican and Maori

There is a quiet little suburb of Rotorua where you can see a Tudor style Anglican church set in a historic and sacred Maori village.
Ohinemutu is the beautiful lakeside setting for St Faith’s Church & Tamatekapua Meeting House.

Move aside work… there is deep thinking to be done
According to the flag counter on this blog (which I check at least ten times daily and it is a source of constant amazement to me) my latest new visitor is from Greece.
I have never been to Greece but as you may or may not know it is on my bucket list.
It just made me wonder if the person in Greece had their own bucket list with New Zealand on it?
Or even, bizarrely (or not) – travelling around New Zealand in a campervan?
Am I not only living my dream life but that of someone else?
Is there someone in Greece, or Peru, living their own dream life but blogging about having New Zealand on their bucket list?
I must learn not to think too deeply about things like this, especially when I have real work to be doing.
I think this is called procrastination.
Did I tell you last week my latest readers were from Mexico and the Bahamas….
